Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus
Ioanna Portolou’s Griffón Dance Company returns to Epidaurus with Kaos, bringing to a close the exploratory and artistic process beginning last year with the workshop “Chaos & Order” during the second cycle of Epidaurus Lyceum 2018.
The performance focuses on humanity's endless struggle with Chaos in an attempt to create a lawful order of boundaries, harmony and collectivities. Biblical imagery reintroduce on stage a new version of the first humans wandering on the face of the Earth – a contemporary Babel.
Griffόn Dance Company was founded in 2000 by Ioanna Portolou. Performances of the company have been presented in various theatres and institutions in Greece, such as: Onassis Cultural Centre, Athens & Epidaurus Festival, Megaron - The Athens Concert Hall, Greek Art Theatre Karolos Koun, Kalamata International Dance Festival, Dimitria Festival, having all these years traveled internationally, inside and outside of Europe (England, Germany, Serbia, Egypt, Skopje etc.).
From 2000 and for four consecutive years, the company had a steady cooperation with Amore Theatre presenting in that period five works of its own.
In 2012, after being commissioned, the company choreographed and presented Beethoven’s “The Creatures of Prometheus” ballet, in cooperation with the ‘Camerata – The Friends of Music Orchestra’ on the main stage of Onassis Cultural Centre, while in the past they have also been committed with performances in the framework of important cultural institutions such as the performances ‘Lapland’ (2004) and ‘Apple tree’ (2006) at Megaron, The Athens Concert Hall.
The last three performances, Risk (Onassis Cultural Centre, 2018), Elizabeth (Megaron Athens Concert Hall, 2019) and KAOS (Small theatre of ancient Epidaurus, 2019 )mark the beginning of a new artistic era for the company.
The company is now working on her new production GRIMM to premiere in 2020.
